Flash flood warning in effect

A flash flood warning is in effect for southwest Colorado through midnight tonight, and while the brunt storm is expected to hit Southwest San Juan Mountain communities, the warning extends to Archuleta County.

A flash flood watch was issued earlier today, with Archuleta County's director of emergency management, Thad McKain, reporting shortly after 4 p.m. that it had been upgraded to a warning.

According to the watch issued earlier, the flash flood threat is greatest for small streams, creeks, normally dry wash beds, slot canyons, slick rock areas and burn scars.

According to the National Weather Service, a 70-percent chance of heavy rain exists this evening and tonight, with that decreasing to a 50-percent chance of scattered showers Tuesday and diminishing as the week continues.
