A Texas woman drowned in Lake Pagosa Thursday morning, Sept. 10, after experiencing an asthma attack.

According to Undersheriff Tonya Hamilton of the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, Pamela Lawrence, 48, of Austin, had gone out with an unidentified friend to fish Lake Pagosa in an inflatable watercraft Thursday morning when she began experiencing increased asthma symptoms.

While moving around on the watercraft, it capsized, Hamilton explained. At the time, the craft was about 200 feet from shore.

The incident was called to Archuleta County Combined Dispatch at approximately 7 a.m. by a man who lived on the lake and saw the pair struggling in the water.

The friend swam back to within 10 feet of shore with Lawrence and the craft, Hamilton explained, where Lawrence could stand up.
