Imagine school kids being able to travel back and forth between Pagosa Springs High School and the elementary school without clogging up the town’s streets with a bunch of teenage drivers and without the little tykes being forced to walk along the edge of a street that has no sidewalk.
Older siblings could safely pick up a younger brother or sister and walk them home after school. Elementary school teachers could take their classes to watch a play in the high school auditorium without the expense of using a school bus. Kids would be encouraged to go play outside and get some exercise instead of spending so much time staring at a television or computer screen.
It would be healthy.
It would be good for the environment.
It would cut down on the local traffic jams so frustratingly common before and after school.
Annie Sewell, a representative from the local Safe Routes to School Coalition, also known as the Retro Metro Kids, presented this vision to the town’s planning commission at its most recent meeting.
