The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will have work underway Aug. 20 to scope the U.S. 160 Wolf Creek Pass tunnel for future fiber optics installation.

The installation, scheduled for next summer, will greatly improve remote monitoring and traffic operations.

Travel impacts

To enable crews to survey the area, remove manhole covers and other scoping activities, the tunnel will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. Travelers will detour around the tunnel on the old U.S. 160 alignment.

The fiber optic installation project is expected to be underway next summer, 2016.
