Hospital expansion plans approved

The Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s expansion project took a significant step forward this week when its major design review application was approved by the town’s planning commission, which also acts as the town’s design review board.

Architect Jon Tucker introduced the presentation by explaining, “We are proposing a 23,800-square-foot, two-story addition to the existing hospital to house the growth of the clinic, which has outgrown its current footprint within the hospital.”

Tucker clarified that there are currently seven providers using only 14 exam rooms to offer their services to the public, “Which is a very tight and crowded ratio.” The new clinic will have 30 exam rooms and will eventually accommodate 10 physicians and specialists.

Tucker said that a three-to-one ratio of exam rooms per doctor is much more appropriate and closer to industry standards.
