The Pagosa Charter School Initiative is pleased to present an evening with Jonathan Mann, regional director of Expeditionary Learning, an innovative approach to education that is currently growing in popularity.
Mann will offer his insights at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, at the Ross Aragon Community Center. The presentation is free to the public; anyone interested in innovative education is welcome to attend.
Expeditionary Learning (http://www.elschools.org/) is an educational model that is based off the 10 basic principals of Outward Bound, an international organization that teaches kids leadership skills through outdoor learning expeditions.
By focusing on character development, EL utilizes these expeditions that include mountaineering, fieldwork and community-based projects where students discover self-worth and a new passion within that propels itself into other aspects of learning. What makes EL a growing educational model across the country is their refined professional development trainings that help new and veteran teachers in all settings to ignite each student’s motivation, persistence and compassion so they become active contributors to building a better world and succeed in school, college, career and life.
Mann’s presentation will be followed by a Q&A, and light snacks and beverages will be provided.
The Pagosa Charter School Initiative is a nonprofit group dedicated to providing a public K-8 school option to families in Pagosa Springs. We are currently exploring many academic models and this is one of several presentations that will help our community decide what approach will best serve our community.
