Sales tax shows significant increase for February

The local sales tax collections received by Archuleta County last week for the month of February continue to show skewed results, with the Colorado Department of Revenue crediting the local economy with a lot more growth than it actually had.

According to a report issued last week by Archuleta County Finance Director Larry Walton, the gross amount of the February 2015 sales tax was $547,896.48, while total collections in February of 2014 (one year ago) were $428,721.37, which seems to indicate that over-the-year collections grew by $119,175, or 28 percent.

However, Walton explained that more than half of the increase, or $62,521, was related to prior years — going back as far as 2011 — and with those factored out, the February increase was actually only $56,654 or 13.2 percent.
