The Archuleta County Republican Women’s group meets the second Tuesday of every month at Nello’s Bistro from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Meetings feature speakers ranging from national to local experts discussing topics relative to local and national political, social and community concerns.
Topics and speakers for the first six months of 2015 will be local elected officials and community experts discussing goals, directions, needs and concerns for the entity they represent. This information will make us more knowledgeable citizens, enabling us to support and give informed input into community directions and issues.
To kick off this year, the Jan. 13 meeting will feature Mayor Don Volger and Town Manager Greg Schulte, who will be discussing such topics as state of the town, a Wal-Mart update, unemployment rate, affordable housing, etc. There is always time allowed for audience questions and answers.
Greg Schulte, with over 25 years of local and state government experience, is presently the town manager for Pagosa Springs in Archuleta County. Schulte also served as county administrator for Archuleta County for about five years. Prior to moving to Colorado in 2007, he was with the City of Sacramento, Calif., for 12 years in a variety of assignments. Other agencies he has been employed with include San Luis Obispo County, Placer County Transportation Planning Agency and the State of California Department of Transportation.
Don Volger has been a resident of Pagosa Springs for 40 years. His career has included working construction until 1977, at which time he began his law enforcement career. In 1984, Don was appointed chief TracyBunning’s successor and continued in that capacity until retiring in 2008. Much of his spare time is taken up with volunteer activities such as serving on the town council, on the Axis Health Systems board of directors, in the men’s ministry at the Pagosa Pregnancy Support Center and as a servant team member at CrossRoad Christian Fellowship, plus being a hunter education instructor and teacher of gun safety classes for women.
Most impressive are the mayor’s personal beliefs on community and conflict resolution, which will serve him well in his capacity as mayor and for Pagosa Springs. Some of those included in his bio are: “I constantly look for truth in the issues of life and then try my best to make decisions based on the truth as I understand it. ... I place more value on attempting to develop and maintain healthy relationships rather than proving that I’m right when differences of opinion surface. Many times I think it best to ‘agree to disagree’ and move forward.”
All are welcome to attend. Guests can choose from one of three menu items for a $10 lunch.
