Special to The SUN

For the 14th consecutive year, Pagosa Springs Middle School’s eighth-grade class, together with the Town of Pagosa Springs and the Ross Aragon Community Center, are holding a breakfast to honor and thank the veterans of Archuleta County for their service to their country.

The students, parents and teachers prepare and serve breakfast to all the veterans who attend. The breakfast is from 7:30 to 11 a.m. in the Community Center gym.

This tradition was started under the leadership of Dan Janowsky, then eighth-grade social studies teacher, and has continued under the leadership of current eighth-grade social studies teacher Scott White.

While this is a great way for our students to give back to the community and to acknowledge the service of the veterans of our county, it is also a great opportunity for learning for our students.

The Colorado Academic Standards that our students are learning require students to engage in public speaking. Students contact individual veterans to invite them to the breakfast. They also speak in public forums, such as at their churches, to invite veterans and talk about the event. Additionally, veterans from the community also speak to all eighth-grade students during their advisory period and help them understand about service to one’s country.

We hope to see the largest turnout ever for this great event. Mark your calendars for Nov. 11 at 7:30 a.m.
