Street reconstruction on hold, other projects planned

One major concern that has popped up again during this budget season is the sorry state of streets and sidewalks in downtown Pagosa Springs.

Council member David Schanzenbaker has reported several times seeing northside residents walking down the middle of 6th Street to buy groceries at the Sonoco gas station because there are few sidewalks and no grocery stores in the downtown area.

Councilor Clint Alley has complained about the sidewalk on the 1st Street bridge and described how dangerous it is to try to ride a bicycle over the bridge with trucks speeding along U.S. 160. Mayor Don Volger has mentioned a similar concern for the proximity of traffic and pedestrians on the Hot Springs Boulevard bridge near the Visitor Center.
