Special to The SUN

The Scott Kay Memorial Fund is an effort dedicated to providing students in and around Pagosa with the opportunity to pursue their skiing passion.

The fund was established in memory of Scott Kay, who lost his life in an avalanche four years ago.

Kay was incredibly passionate about skiing and he loved to see young kids experience such a unique sport. The fund’s mission is to carry on Kay’s legacy by providing scholarships for local students.

The Scott Kay Fund (SKF) is proud to award a scholarship to Ian Roth.

Roth is currently a junior at Pagosa Springs High School. He has become an avid skier, and is specifically interested in ski racing. Last winter, Roth competed at NASTAR Nationals and placed fourth in the gold category. Roth is also interested in kayaking, drawing, biking and photography.

SKF will be sending Roth to Copper Mountain over Thanksgiving to participate in a weeklong ski camp run by National Alpine Ski Camps. The camp boasts three hours each day of uninterrupted gate training and a 6:1 ratio of athlete to coach.

SKF is excited to be able to provide Roth with this opportunity to improve his natural talent. As a giveback to the fund, Roth will be helping with the SKF fundraiser this fall.

If you would like to follow his progress, keep an eye out for future event details.
