Did you know Habitat for Humanity has a home repair program? Since 2011, Habitat for Humanity has partnered with over a dozen homeowners in Archuleta County to assist with much needed repairs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
This program is bringing the community together by forging new partnerships, serving more people, and creating additional opportunities to volunteer and allow people to get to know their neighbors.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors partnerships have allowed for home improvements ranging from house painting to roof replacement. One of the earliest and most intensive undertakings was the leveling of a trailer home that required the replacement of several concrete slabs. Other projects have included replacement of damaged siding, replacing windows to enhance insulation and reduce loss of heat during winter months thus reducing utility expenses, repairing flooring that had been damaged by a minor flood, and replacing faulty plumbing fixtures. As with other Habitat for Humanity programs, the majority of the labor is conducted by volunteers.
To qualify for partnership with Neighbors Helping Neighbors, you must reside in the home you own and meet income guidelines. The population served generally earns between 20 and 60 percent of the area median income. Approved partners receive a zero interest, short-term loan. Partners are also required to perform a nominal amount of sweat equity hours, which can include performing some of the work on the home or providing lunches for volunteers. Habitat for Humanity’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors home repair program follows the organization’s mission of providing affordable and decent housing, but allows expansion of services to include greater partnerships in the community and safety for homeowners.
