Town clarifies open burning permit requirements

Pagosa Springs Police Chief William Rockensock will ask town council at today’s noon meeting to approve the second reading of an ordinance that would clarify the town’s open burning law.

Ordinance 813 would add a new section 12.8.15 to the town’s municipal code, as well as amend subsection 11.1.3(12), which defines open burning as a violation of the public nuisance law.

As it stands now, the burning of any trash, lumber, leaves, straw or any other combustible material within the town limits is a violation of the nuisance ordinance, unless it is expressly authorized by an appropriate permit. However, the code doesn’t specify where to obtain a burn permit.
