The Mountain View Homemakers will meet from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. or so on Thursday, July 10, in the Extension building at the fairgrounds.
Instead of our usual covered-dish luncheon of salads, casseroles, other main dishes and decadent desserts, all requiring our sitting at tables, members are asked to bring finger foods for this one gathering. That will allow members and their invited guests to stroll around the room to see items that will be auctioned during the meeting.
Unlike several of the previous years, this year’s auction will be more like those in days gone by. Each member is asked to bring only one item. The theme is “Make it, bake it, buy it and bring it to auction.”
A made item should be something that one has constructed, such as a quilted item or set, a painting or other artwork, an item they’ve covered with leather, or some other thing that they have created.
The second category, a baked item, might be a casserole that is ready for the freezer of the winning bidder, a special cake that has brought accolades in the past, or even a big tin full of cookie creations like those that have won a blue ribbon at a previous fair.
The third category is bought. This category is for those who choose to instead shop for and bring a purchased item for auction. Anything that they think would bring good bids. Among the items we’ve heard discussed were gift cards or certificates, an item from a local shop or even a fruit basket.
Mountain View Homemakers is a monthly gathering of women who are interested in making the lives of their families and their community more livable. The meetings usually include lunch and either an enlightening speaker or a hands-on community project. The club annually sponsors the Holiday Bazaar, with the money they raise going to a number of local nonprofit efforts.
