Colorado U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is encouraging thousands of Coloradans to claim $14 million in tax refunds from 2010 before it’s too late.
The IRS estimates that 17,000 Coloradans have not claimed their 2010 refunds and that at least half of these unclaimed refunds are more than $560 each, totaling up to $14 million throughout the state. The deadline to claim a 2010 refund is April 15, 2014.
“This is money that belongs to Coloradans, not the IRS. And time is running out to claim it,” Bennet said. “For many families, times are still tight, and this money can make a substantial difference in their budget.”
To claim their refund, taxpayers must file a 2010 tax return. Taxpayers seeking a 2010 refund may have their checks held if they have not filed tax returns for 2011 and 2012.
IRS Free File is available to individuals making $58,000 or less in 2013. Individuals making more than $58,000 can still use the Free File site to fill out their tax forms and file their tax return.
