Water loss and infrastructure leaks were discussed at the Pagosa Area Water and Sanitation District (PAWSD) board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 12 and were again discussed at a board work session the following day.
According to the October water loss report presented by district manager Ed Winton, the district lost 18.5 million gallons last month from the distribution system — that’s enough water to keep 14,919 mature peach trees alive, watering each one with 40 gallons a day, for a month in the summer. This amounts to 34-percent water loss last month, slightly up from September when the district incurred 33-percent water loss, totaling 18.1 million gallons. Although the percentage of water loss fluctuates each month due to differences in water sold, the district is consistently losing approximately 18 million gallons of water per month. The industry standard for water loss is between 5 and 7 percent.
