In November, the Weminuche Audubon Society begins getting ready for December’s Christmas Bird Count.

This year’s count is the 114th sponsored by the National Audubon Society.

Primarily, getting ready means that society members try to learn as much as possible about the birds that frequent Archuleta County during December and January.

Part of that learning process involves a series of four training sessions presented by Audubon Rockies’ Becky Gillette.

Each session concentrates on a different family of birds: raptors, water birds, or sparrows and thrushes, for example. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn some new identification techniques, but it isn’t necessary to come to the training in order to participate in the CBC. Plus, you can attend any or all sessions.

Training sessions will be held in the Ross Aragon Community Center on Wednesday evenings. Meet in either the South or West Conference Room at 6:30 p.m. Check the signs on the doors to find out which room is being used. Or check The PREVIEW Calendar for the location for each training session.

Training dates are Nov 13 and 20, Dec 4 and 11.
