Pagosa Springs’ two Rotary clubs will host an open house on Monday, Oct. 21. The event starts at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the First Southwest Bank on Navajo Trail Drive.

You may already know that the clubs sponsor Pagosa’s Fourth of July Parade, a Kentucky Derby Party, and the Hollywood Mania and Mardi Gras parties. You may not know that the Thursday club gives $20,000 in scholarships every year to graduates of Pagosa Springs High School. Plus, both the Pagosa Mountain Morning Club and the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club are engaged in year-round activities that support our community in many ways.

Monday night’s Rotary open house could be an eye-opener for many who may have wondered what the local Rotary clubs do — other than meet once a week. For anyone with an interest in joining either club, the open house could provide the impetus that could set that membership in motion.

For most members of the local Rotary clubs, the clubs provide an avenue for getting involved in a number of very worthwhile community support activities. It is this opportunity for personal “giving” that most members cite as their principal reason for joining.

While the Pagosa Mountain Morning Rotary Club holds its meetings at breakfast each Wednesday and the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club holds its weekly meetings at lunch on Thursdays, both clubs are about much more than just the weekly meetings built around meals.  “Service above self” is the driving force for each member of the two clubs.  Expectations for active participation in the clubs’ many service projects are high.

If you would like to learn more about the clubs’ many service activities in Pagosa — whether or not you’re considering membership — attending Monday night’s open house will be time well spent.

The open house will be “Pagosa Informal.” Refreshments will be served.
