The lights went off in Pagosa Country Monday night at approximately 9:30 p.m., but the cause of the problem was miles away.

According to LPEA’s Mike Alley, the outage lasted only a few minutes and included all LPEA customers in the area from Bayfield to Pagosa Springs.

Alley reported that a storm in the Bayfield area knocked a Tri State “switcher” open and shut off power to all Pagosa area substations, plunging the area into darkness.

Alley said the system was checked and personnel, “threw the switch back and it held.” The operation, said Alley, was performed from the Tri State office in Grand Junction.
