Problem with PAWSD biosolids project

When a biosolids greenhouse was under construction on the Pagosa Area Water and Sanitation District campus near the Vista subdivision in 2011, it was touted as an eco-friendly way for PAWSD to reduce costs and produce fertilizer that could then be distributed.

But now, only a couple years later, significant issues have come to light concerning the project — namely the facility’s lack of key equipment and the resulting inability to reach temperatures needed to pasteurize sludge and remove pathogens to produce an EPA-approved by-product called “Class A biosolids.” The equipment was never ordered and installed.
