Our Savior Lutheran Church and School is preparing for a change — a combined kindergarten/first grade classroom.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013-2014 school year.

School hours will be Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Mary Jo Janowsky will be the classroom instructor, with a full-time assistant. Janowsky attended Houghton College in western New York two years and, after moving to Colorado with her husband and four children, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. She also studied pipe organ and music education at University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo. Janowsky has 25 years of experience teaching kindergarten and first grade in public and private schools. She especially loves singing with children and, “has a song or rhyme for everything we do.

“I try to establish an atmosphere of a happy community who care about each other and show it in our words and ways with each other,” said Janowsky. “So learning takes place at work or play in an attractive classroom, in our case, called ‘The Land of the Letter People,’a land of 26 huggable ‘inflatable’ people, each with a specific personality, song and weekly take-home newspaper and story. Their activities make learning to read an age appropriate adventure. The Letter People also provide materials for a good transition into the first grade curriculum. Our Trays and Stations activities for independent learning, over all the strands of the curriculum will be designed for each grade level. This can allow much parent involvement to end a happy day together at school.”

Class will be limited in size to maintain a low student-teacher ratio.

Our Savior Lutheran School and Preschool are known for providing a quality Christian educational facility with well trained and experienced staff, low staff turnover, ample opportunities for educational and social stimulation, and effective communication between parents and teaches concerning general aims and routine functioning of the program.
