Special to The PREVIEW

The 2013 Humane Society of Pagosa Springs Chocolate Auction was an overwhelming success and drew a crowd of people who came to socialize, enjoy a delicious seated lasagna dinner, and have the chance to bid on 32 beautifully created chocolate desserts.

Among those desserts were some true works of art and once again this year attendees had the opportunity to vote for their favorites.

The results of the voting were as follows:

• Most Beautiful: First Place — Let Them Eat Cake by Nita Niece; Second Place — Chef Larry Schwartz; Third Place — Alley House.

• Most Creative: First Place — And Justice For All; Second Place — Pagosa Baking Company; Third Place — Boss Hogg’s.

• Best Everyday: First Place — Tie One On by Bev Chester; Second Place — Sweets & Such; Third Place — Two Chix & A Hippy

The Chocolate Auction was such a wonderful way to have a fun filled evening and, at the same time, give support to animals that depend on the Humane Society Shelter for housing and safe keeping until their owner or an adoptive family can be found. This year’s auction raised nearly enough money to cover an unanticipated doubling in food costs at the animal shelter.  We are truly grateful to everyone who attended and those who participated in the auction.

The Humane Society would like to thank the following businesses and individuals who donated the wonderful chocolate items up for bid:  Choke Cherry Tree, Chef Larry Schwartz, Alley House, Nello’s Bistro and Espresso Bar, Two Chix & A Hippy, Cowboy Catering, Higher Grounds, Cold Springs Ice and Bottled Water, Boss Hogg’s, Chef Doug Anderson, Let Them Eat Cake by Nita Niece,  Higher Grounds, Cafe Colorado, Boulder Coffee Cafe, Made In Colorado Shoppe, And Justice For All, Tie One On by Bev Chester, Pagosa Youth Center, The Decorating Lady, Pagosa Baking Company, Sweets and Such,  A Sugar High,  The Chamber of Commerce/Jan Santopietro, Aspen  Moose, Little Weedz and Ferrari Studios, Plaza Grille, and Humane Society representatives Bonnie Hite and Jean Carson.

A huge thank you goes out to Jake Montroy, our wonderful auctioneer; Mike Branch and Carl Smith, our dedicated spotters; and Mike Hayward who provided the fantastic sound system and music for the event.  Special thanks go out to the ever faithful Humane Society volunteers who give tirelessly of themselves to make sure that everything runs smoothly for this and every event.
