Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s (PSMC) EMS Education Center will be providing an entry-level, nationally-recognized Emergency Medical Responder course in Pagosa Springs starting March 25.
The PSMC EMS Education Center is one of four approved agencies in the State of Colorado that is certified to teach the EMR curriculum as designated by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course, which was formerly referred to as “First Responder,” is an entry-level emergency medical provider course that prepares individuals to assist in medical emergencies as a first responder.
The successful completion of an approved EMR course is often a pre-requisite to, and prepares individuals for, pursuing a career as a firefighter, emergency medical technician/paramedic and many law enforcement programs.
This EMR course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills to manage many medical- and trauma-related emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are eligible to seek national certification as an EMR through the NREMT and are eligible for EMR recertification every two years by meeting the NREMT requirements, which consist of accumulating 12 continuing education credits (CEs). These CEs are available through the PSMC EMS Education Center.
The course has been designed to meet or exceed the National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Responder, as developed by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is 51 hours of combined didactic and skills instruction. The course consists of twenty (20) lessons established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covered in 11 classes.
Classes begin on March 25 at 6 p.m. and are held on each Monday and Thursday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. through May 2.
In addition to being able to test for the NREMT EMR certification, each successful student will also receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) certificate.
The PSMC EMS Education Center offers quality training to increase the knowledge necessary for managing emergency medical situations. Courses are taught by qualified, street-experienced emergency medical providers.
The Education Center coordinates a wide range of courses; including CPR and First Aid for the lay-person, entry-level EMR and Basic Emergency Medical Technician courses, advanced level training for the Advanced Life Support provider, and specialty seminars taught by industry leading experts in emergency medicine.
