Ford was named the winner of The Denver Post’s “Colorado’s top thinkers of 2012: Energy” category on Jan. 12.
“That was a very pleasant surprise,” Ford said, adding. “It was nice to see Pagosa highlighted.”
According to The Denver Post, in December, readers and staff were asked to help create, “a list of great thinkers in Colorado, folks whose accomplishments or ideas made them stand out as we looked back at the year’s events.”
In referring to Ford’s companies in “Pagosa Country” (Pagosa Cattle Company and Renewable Forest Energy LLC), The Denver Post cited the companies’ $4.5 million long-term stewardship contract with the U.S. Forest Service to remove saw timber, biomass and other materials from the San Juan National Forest, and a planned gasification power plant. That plant is expected to not only produce power, but should result in additional water reaching the forest floor, as well as being created by the plant.
Ford was nominated for the honor by Terri House, publisher of The Pagosa Springs SUN. House was solicited for a nomination by Curtis Hubbard, editorial page editor for The Denver Post. The winners in a variety of categories were selected by Post staff.
Receiving an honorable mention in the energy category is Amory Lovins, chairman and chief scientist at the Rocky Mountain Institute in Snowmass, Colo.
