Pagosa Springs members of the San Juan alumnae chapter of Pi Beta Phi gathered May 6 at Mountain Pizza for a pizza party to celebrate Founders’ Day, the club’s Golden Arrows (ladies who have been members of the sorority for 50 years or more) and spring. Seated, left to right, are Penny Hart and Melissa McDonald. Standing, left to right, are Carole Howard, Joni Rose, Paula Tennant and Mary Bailly. Pi Beta Phi is the oldest sorority in the U.S. It was founded in 1867 at Monmouth College in Illinois by 12 creative and courageous women at a time when only five state universities admitted women. Today there are 135 collegiate Pi Phi chapters in the U.S. and nearly 300 alumnae clubs around the world.
