Jim Askins, 76, of Pagosa Springs, Colo., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. Jim was born July 14, 1945, the son of H. Harry and Lillian Andrews Askins in Houston, Texas. Jim is survived by his wife, Julie; by his daughters, Kimberly Ely, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jennifer Park and husband Jeb, of Thornton, Colo.; five granddaughters: Lillie and Katie Ely, Breanna Ely Payne, and Kaylee and Abby Park. Jim is also survived by his most faithful sidekick and lifelong friend, Robbie Boswell, of Granite Shoals, Texas. Jim was a real estate broker and a mortgage broker in Albuquerque, where he met Julie. In 2000, Jim and Julie moved to Pagosa Springs, Colo., where he opened Fairway Mortgage. In 2006, Jim and Julie moved down to Ripple Valley Ranch, a property outside of Pagosa Springs that had been in his family since the late 1960s. In 2009, Jim retired and sold the ranch, but continued to live there and work with the new owner. Jim reinvented himself for the last time and learned and continued to learn all about irrigation and planting crops. He was involved in the day-to-day operations of the ranch, until his death. He was most happy and at peace on his Kubota tractor.
