The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate wrestling team will be back in action this weekend, hosting multiple events at Pagosa Springs High School.

On Friday, Jan. 7, the Pirates will host a dual with the 2A Center Vikings, with matches starting at 6 p.m.

“We’ve got a packed week and weekend ahead of us,” coach Dan Janowsky wrote in an email to The SUN.

Action continues for the Pirates the next day, on Saturday, Jan. 8, with the Rocky Mountain Invitational. Matches are set to start at 10 a.m.

Janowsky indicated that semifinal matches will start around 1 p.m. and finals matches will start around 5 p.m.

“The Rocky Mountain Invitational is our annual home tournament and kicks off the second half of the season, the first post holiday tournament in the area,” Janowsky wrote. “We hope to use the event also to commemorate the 50th year of the Pagosa Springs High School wrestling program.”

He explained that a total of 17 teams are scheduled to compete, “including some top ranked teams.”

Janowsky highlighted Aztec High School from Aztec, N.M., noting the Tigers are the defending 4A New Mexico state champions.

He also highlighted the Centauri Falcons, who are defending their 2A Colorado state title from last year.

“Both are favorites to win again this year,” he added.

Janowsky also mentioned that the Pirates have had some “pretty fast paced” practices over the break.

“Most of our basic skills have been taught so we can move at a faster pace. We start looking at applying the skills in various situations. Lots of strategy. How to recognize and react to what opponents are doing,” he wrote.

The Pirates last competed before the holiday break in the Warrior Classic Tournament held in Grand Junction Dec.17-Dec. 18, 2021, at which the team placed 10th out of 44 competing teams.
