“They’re coming into their own … they’re growing into their feet,” said coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason of this year’s Pagosa Springs High School Pirate boys’ soccer team.
The team finished last season with an overall record of 3-4, missing the playoffs.
Last season took place in the spring with a shorter schedule due to COVID.
This year, the Pirates will play 15 regular-season matches, with the first game scheduled for this weekend, Aug. 20, in Colorado Springs against St. Mary’s High School at 4 p.m.
The Pirates will then travel to Longmont on Saturday, Aug. 21, to take on Mead High School at 9 a.m.
Kurt-Mason indicated that there are currently nine juniors, two freshmen and one senior on the roster.
He also mentioned that he anticipates a few more players joining after this weekend.
“They want to work hard,” Kurt-Mason said. “They enjoy the competition.”
He explained that this year’s team has been “playing with great confidence and maturity” so far in preparation for the season.
Kurt-Mason also noted that the team has been working on its conditioning.
He went on to mention that senior Ethan Mazur has stepped into a leadership role on the team.
“If you’re going to define a leader, that’s the guy … he leads by example,” Kurt-Mason said.
