Pirate wrestling team takes first at state, Lucero claims third title


    All seven members of the Pagosa Springs High School wrestling team who advanced to Friday’s state tournament placed in the top five, helping the team to a first-place finish.

    At 160 pounds, Cameron Lucero face Fort Morgan’s Cael Langford in his quest to earn his third state title. Lucero was successful, defeating Langford with a 9-6 decision.

    At 220 pounds, Skyler Hill faced Platte Valley’s Jeremiah Garcia, with both of the wrestlers entering the match undefeated on the season and vying for first place. Hill finished second after losing to Garcia in a 3-1 decision.

    At 145, Dylan Tressler took on Lamar’s Zane Rankin in the class’s first-place match, but felt short in a 3-2 decision, earning second.

    At 120 pounds, Erik Wyman faced Elizabeth’s Andrew Kramer in a third-place match, with Wyman earning third with a pin.

    At 152 pounds, Brae Bergdolt (16-1) took on Montezuma-Cortez’s Anthony Abeta in the third-place match. Bergdolt took third with a 4-2 decision.

    At 182 pounds, Wil Aucoin faced James Irwin’s Jacob Hustoles in a third-place match. Aucoin took fourth after falling via pin.

    At 170 pounts, Grant Aucoin faced Denver West’s NaMarcus Williams in the class’s fifth-place match. Aucoin took fifth with an 8-7 decision after taking the lead in the match’s final moments.
