Special to The PREVIEW

Join musician and music therapist Paul Roberts for a free hand-drumming class at the Pagosa Lakes Clubhouse on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at noon.

The class offers a welcoming environment that encourages fun, creativity, playfulness and connecting with others.

The hand-drumming class will not meet on Tuesdays, Dec. 11, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, but will meet on Dec. 18.

“We first learned about Paul’s hand-drumming class through The PREVIEW,” said Allyson Rowe. “We weren’t sure if the class would be right for us, but decided to try it. My adult daughter, Lisa, has some left-sided paralysis after a stroke, and I thought the music, vibrations and interaction would be good for her. The class has exceeded our expectations. We both immediately felt welcome and accepted.”

She continued, “The classes are very therapeutic, in the aforementioned ways, and in that my daughter has begun trying to drum with both hands, both the good one and the paralyzed side. An added bonus is that I, also, enjoy the class. I am encouraged to explore my own creativity, and I feel free to sing, which I never do, and to drum out my frustrations as well.”

Rowe added, “Throughout the weeks, different folks have appeared, of all ages and experiences, from children to octogenarians; from experienced musicians, to those like me, with no real experience at all. It’s a great time for all of us. I would encourage anyone and everyone to give it a try for your own benefit. There are no judgements or expectations in the class, just fun and, in our case, it’s very therapeutic. We thank Paul for always showing up to teach us, for his patience and the atmosphere of inclusiveness he creates.”

Designed as an opportunity for people of all ages to unleash their creativity, the drumming class is a family-friendly activity. No previous experience is necessary. Drums are provided for those who do not have one.
