On the afternoon of Sept. 12, the Horse Fire became more active on the south and east side of the fire. The San Juan hotshots, an IA module are one scene securing the containment lines on Horse Mountain Road (FSR 730). More smoke is expected to be visible today and tomorrow as crews conduct back burning on the containment lines. The public is requested to avoid the Horse Mountain trail area to allow the crews to space to work. Three type 2 crews and air attack have been ordered and are on their way. The fire is within the contingency lines and no structures or private property is threatened.
The Horse Fire is located 16 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs and 8 miles north of U.S. 160. The fire was started by a lightning strike that was discovered on Aug. 28 and is over 300 acres. The fire is burning on steep rugged terrain in dense mixed conifers with pockets of aspen and oak brush.
As the weather and fuels dry in the area, more fire activity is expected and smoke may be visible from Pagosa, U.S. 160, Bayfield, Ignacio and Durango. Smoke from the fire is currently affecting areas north of Pagosa Springs.
