Special to The SUN
Happy new year from the Pagosa Nordic Club (PNC).
PNC is participating in the first ever regional Southwest Nordic Race Series along with our Nordic ski neighbors, Chama, Telluride and Durango. The series first race is hosted by PNC on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Falls Creek Nordic Trail, located 2 miles east of the scenic overlook hairpin curve on Wolf Creek Pass. Look for Forest Service road sign No. 39.
Even though the snowfall this year has been scant, PNC has been grooming Falls Creek and conditions are surprisingly good.
The event contains a variety of races for everyone including: A 5.5 km freestyle citizens race (skate ski or classic ski); and skiathlon races that include a skate ski and classic ski legs; adult 5.5 km/5.5 km, youth 3 km/3 km and KidK.
Awards for top finishers in each category will take place in the parking after the race.
Come on out and join PNC for a really fun race day on your skis. There is a race course for everyone. More details and registration is available at PagosaNordic.com.
We are in need a few race course monitor volunteers, including: registration 8-9:15 a.m.; starting line 8:45-11:30 a.m.; along the course 8:45-11:30 a.m.; and at the finish at the top 8:45-11:30 a.m.
Please let us know as soon as you can if you are interested in helping with at the race at PagosaNordic@gmail.com.
If you are not able to volunteer, come on out and be a spectator and cheer on racers from around the southwest. Bring your cowbells and noise makers.
Please plan on Nordic skiing at other locations, such as Alberta Park at Wolf Creek Ski Area, during the race times to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Grab your skis and we will see you out on the trails.
