San Juan Stargazers to celebrate fifth anniversary

    Special to The PREVIEW
The San Juan Stargazers will have their regular Thursday meeting on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center Conference Room (Hot Springs Boulevard).
This winter, when we do not have guest speakers, we will be studying the Hubble telescope and its specular discoveries and images. The Webb telescope is scheduled to launch in 2018, so we need to get caught up on the Hubble. We will begin this series of Great Courses lessons from the beginning since one of our teacher/members thought we should study the information better. She made discussion questions and learning activities, which are more beneficial than just watching a video. We hope to see you to learn more about astronomy. It will be fun and not difficult.
On Friday, Nov. 10, we will be having our fifth anniversary celebration and dinner. We have become a big enough club that we no longer fit in the home we’ve used for the past four years. We have a new location that is big and beautiful.
If you do not receive a location email, please call Joan at (303) 995-2888. She is so excited about having more space that she will be creating fun games and activities.
The dinner is for members and Chimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) members who helped with our night sky programs this summer. If you’d like to still join the San Juan Stargazers, call Joan.
Please arrive between 5 and 5:30 p.m., so we can go for a brief walk before our 6 p.m. dinner. We will be having Joan’s grass-fed beef and more, and a wonderful dessert provided by CRIA.
If you would like to bring beer, wine or an appetizer, that would be great, but our main meal will be provided and you do not need to bring anything to attend.
We have available the wonderful 2018 astronomy calendars for only $10. They normally sell for much more and profits go to our scholarship fund. It a spectacular gift that can be enjoyed, learned from and discussed the entire year. Call Joan or contact a club member to place your order.
The San Juan Stargazers are part of the Astronomical League, which includes clubs from all over the U.S. We have a website,, as well as an email address,, and a club phone number, 335-8286, to help communicate with the public.
Anyone interested in learning more about astronomy is invited to all our events.
