The Archuleta County Democratic Party will hold its annual Chili Supper at 5 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the Archuleta County Extension building, located at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds, 344 U.S. 84.
This year, we are honored to have our representative to the state assembly, Barbara McLachlan, and the state Democratic chair, Morgan Carroll, attending. A donation of $10 is suggested for an adult dinner; children are free. In addition to a variety of chili with all the trimmings, we will have salad, cornbread and ice cream sundaes. Beer and wine will be available for $5.
McLachlan was elected in 2016. She is on the Education Committee and the Transportation and Energy Committee.
Among the bills she has sponsored is one to address the shortage of teachers in rural communities. This bill allowed school districts to hire retired teachers without it affecting the teachers’ retirement. She has sponsored resolutions supporting our national monuments and Colorado Ute Indians.
McLachlan is also co-chair of the Young Farmers Committee, which is charged with encouraging young people to pursue careers in agriculture and in preserving our lands for agriculture.
McLachlan will be the keynote speaker and will welcome your questions about issues facing our county.
Morgan Carroll will also be attending the chili supper.
Carroll was elected chair of the Democratic Party in March 2017. She represented House District 36 in the Colorado House and was president of the Senate in 2013-14 and minority leader in 2015. She also ran unsuccessfully against Mike Coffman for U.S. representative in 2016.
She is author of “Take Back Your Government: A Citizen’s Guide to Grassroots Change” and is a practicing attorney.
All donations benefit the local party. If you want to donate chili or other food items such as grated cheese, ready-to-serve salad and dressing, or chips and salsa; want to volunteer to assist; or have questions, contact Sue Yalom at 731-1091 or Becky Herman at 903-0788. Everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there.
