Intruder incident: Durango man fatally shot

Following the shooting incident that occurred 20 miles west on U.S. 160 on Aug. 23, the highway was shut down and diverted onto CR 175 for approximately 15 hours while law enforcement conducted their investigation.
The highway was re-opened for regular traffic around 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 and the crime scene was officially released by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Department.
In a statement released by Archuleta County Coroner Dan Keuning, the time of death of the victim was recorded at 10:45 on the night of Aug. 23 and the pronouncement of death was made on Aug. 24 at 9:25 a.m. An autopsy was performed on Aug. 25.  According to Keuning, the official cause of death is homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
The victim is a 65-year-old male from the Durango area.  No name is being released until the next of kin are notified.
