Pirate basketball teams advance to Sweet 16

Both the Pagosa Springs High School Pirate basketball teams defeated their respective opponents Friday night, advancing to Saturday’s Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs.

The No. 1 Lady Pirates (22-0 on the season) defeated the No. 32 Buena Vista Demons 51-28 in Pagosa Springs, and will now face the winner of No. 16 Grand Valley (17-5) and No. 17 Colorado Springs Christian (16-6), who began playing at 8 p.m.

The No. 16 Pagosa played No. 17 Basalt at Bruce Randolph High School in Denver, with the Pirates defeating the Longhorns 54-52 in overtime. The Pirates (14-8) will now face No. 1 Denver Science and Tech-Stapleton (22-1) in the Sweet 16 round.

Both Pirate teams will be in action at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Pirates will be broadcast on 1400 AM, while the boys’ radio broadcast will be on 106.1 FM.
