Pirates find momentum in Del Norte victory


On Friday, Dec. 18, the Pagosa Pirates basketball team brought home a victory from their match-up against the Del Norte Tigers with a final score of 67-41.

According to coach Randy Sorensen who recounted the game in an email to The SUN, “We got off to a fast start against Del Norte and led 19 to six after the first quarter.”

The team has seen several “dry spells” during the second quarter of recent games, the coach explained, and Del Norte was no exception. In the second quarter, the Pirates notched another 10 points, while their opponents scored 14.

The team brought it back after halftime, outscoring the Tigers 20-10, tallying a total score of 49-30 as they headed into the final quarter. “We came out strong in the third quarter and were able to extend the lead and pull away,” Sorensen stated.

In the fourth quarter, the Pirates once again outscored their counterparts 18-11.

Isaiah Griego led the Pirates on the scoreboard with a total of 25 points throughout the game against Del Norte. Griego scored two three-pointers and notched five steals against the Tigers. Briar Erskine put 20 points on the scoreboard for his team, including one three-pointer and making five rebounds during the match. Ty Kimsey and Keaton Laverty each tallied several assists, Kimsey with four and Laverty with three.
