A structure fire involving an unoccupied log home occurred in the Chromo area on Saturday, Nov. 14.

According to Capt. John Gilbert of the Pagosa Fire Protection District (PFPD), the fire was reported along County Road 382 at 10:31 a.m., with units being immediately dispatched.

The first unit arrived at the scene at 11 a.m., with a total of 14 personnel and eight fire trucks proceeding to arrive at the scene.

Of the 14 personnel, all but three were volunteers, Gilbert reported.

“The fire was under control around 2 p.m.,” Gilbert said, adding that, from there, the firefighters began a salvage and overhaul operation.

A salvage operation involves reducing damage from smoke and water, whereas an overhaul operation involves searching for additional fire hazards and preventing the rekindling of a fire.

PFPD personnel began to leave around 6:40 p.m., though personnel returned the following day to carry out additional overhaul procedures.
