The sword that is the Pagosa Springs High School cross-country team has been pulled from the flames, tempered and sharpened — now it is ready to be put to the test at tomorrow’s regional meet.

For the first time in several years, the PSHS harriers will be looking to earn their way to state in Pagosa Springs by hosting the 11-team 3A Region 1 meet.

“We’re ready to put the blade to the test,” said coach Scott Anderson.

Tomorrow’s meet is set to kick off at 10 a.m. with the girls’ race, followed by the boys’ race at 10:45 a.m.

The top five teams on each side will advance to state competition in Colorado Springs on Oct. 31, as well as the top 15 individual runners on each side.

The regional meet will be held on the same course as the regular-season meet in September, Anderson said.

The course is located within the Ranch Community Property Owners Association and can be reached by heading up North Pagosa Boulevard 0.7 miles, then turning right on Antelope Avenue. From there, the course should be easy to find and should be marked with signs.

As the coach previously noted, the course is spectator-friendly, especially with binoculars.

“We’re very excited to see this all happen,” Anderson said.

On the girls’ side, Anderson said the top spot should, as it has before, come down to a battle between Pagosa and Moffat County.

On the boys’ side, the coach noted that the team could realistically finish anywhere between second and fifth overall, but should earn a spot at the state meet.
