Special to The PREVIEW

The 2015 primary goal of the Earth Community at Pagosa Springs is to educate people about safe and healthy food choices, and to do all we can to influence all levels of government to have GMOs (genetically modified organisms)labeled so consumers can make knowledgeable decisions about what they put into their mouths and bodies.

In October, we will have a free showing of the movie “GMO OMG” with a discussion afterwards. There will be special activities for World Food Day and a rally against Monsanto and other large corporations.

The Earth Community is a group that believes the “Empire Model,” where corporations now rule the world rather than kings and emperors, is not good for the majority or sustainable for the planet. The group’s goal is to provide information and facts to help people make wise decisions.

The Earth Community also is concerned about the closing of the Pagosa Springs Youth Center. The group has discussed the problems this could create for the students and our community and realized that perhaps the most important thing we need to do right now is to ask high school and middle school age youth how they feel and what they think is needed for them in Pagosa Springs. We are developing a questionnaire that may be distributed to students at school. We will be providing an opportunity for students who are home-schooled to also answer the questionnaire. If you share our concern for the youth and our community, please come to our meetings.

We will be meeting Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs Visitor Center conference room. We will be working on these projects and activities. If you want to do something important for yourself and your community, you should attend. See you there.
