The No. 8-ranked Pagosa Springs High School Pirate soccer team chalked up two strong wins last weekend on the road, improving its record to 3-0.
While both games were nonconference matches, the Pirates handed both Lake County and Salida their first losses of the season while scoring 11 goals between the two games.
“It’s a good way to start the season,” coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason said.
The wins also helped the squad make waves at the state level.
As of Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Pirates were ranked No. 8 in 3A boys’ soccer by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA, with the polls determined by coaches and select media members), breaking into the top 10 for the first time this season, and are ranked first in the state per MaxPreps and 79th in the nation.
Helping the Pirates garner the rankings were 11 goals scored in two days last weekend, including seven by senior James Berndt and three by sophomore Jason Monterroso.
Friday, the Pirates hit the road for Leadville to take on the Lake County Panthers, ending the night with a 4-0 victory.
Kurt-Mason said the Pirates liked the game and the fast, turf field, despite the rain, temperatures in the high 30s and high altitude.
