Cross-country ready to return to action

The Pagosa Springs High School cross-country teams will be back in action tomorrow evening following a brief break from official competition.

However, when the teams arrive at the Southwest Sunset XC Classic in Durango Friday evening, the girls’ squad is not anticipated to be at full strength due to illness, while the boys’ squad hopes to be at full strength after having one runner battle a “nagging” injury for part of the week.

“We’re still expecting to put on a pretty good show Friday night under the lights,” coach Scott Anderson said.

The Southwest Sunset XC Classic is set to begin at 6 p.m., with the high school girls running at 8:30 p.m., followed by the high school boys at 9 p.m.

The races will take place at Hillcrest Golf Course, with Anderson stating that the course appears to be spectator-friendly and should be a “decently fast course.”

In lieu of formal competition last week, the team held an intrasquad race atop Wolf Creek Pass, with a team focus on pack times and preparing for upcoming races.
