Today’s home tournament for the Pagosa Springs High School golf team marks the halfway point in the team’s regular season, and the team’s focus remains firmly on one thing — the end of the season.
The quest toward the end of the season, though, is proving to be hard work for the young team, with nerves and youth playing in.
“It’s still very early in the year and I just think they’re young and they get a little nervous and don’t play as well as they can,” said coach Mark Faber.
On Aug. 26, the Pirates traveled to the Devil’s Thumb Golf Club in Delta, and the next day, Aug. 27, the team played at Cobblecreek Golf Club in Montrose. Both were par-72 courses.
“We didn’t play very well at either one of them, actually,” the coach said of the tournaments. “Our youth showed through a little bit.”
At the Delta tournament, the Pirates were led by Owen Severs, who shot a 98, and Ben Pargin, who shot a 100.
Jonathon Robel notched a 110 on the day, followed by Dane Kline with a 112 and Jack Harker with a 113.
The Pirates finished in the bottom third of the tournament, which included about 15 teams, Faber explained.
