Something for everyone at Saturday’s Astronomy/Earth Day Fair

Special to The PREVIEW

The Astronomy/Earth Day Fair at the Pagosa Springs Youth Center (PSYC) (in the alley behind or to the south of the Humane Society Thrift Store) is on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The solar telescope, the astronomy activities and the Chimney Rock Lunar Standstill art contest can be enjoyed by people aged 2 to 102. And, of course, the same goes for our delicious food, including burritos, all-beef hot dogs, chili, chili dogs and nachos, as well as super-healthy strawberry chicken and Caesar salads. There are seven varieties of microwave cupcakes for breakfast or dessert. Proceeds from the sale of the food benefit PSYC.

One opportunity not previously mentioned is for older children and adults. Lectures will be given all day starting every half hour.

Lynnis Steinert will present “Significance of Astronomy to the Ancient People at Chimney Rock.”

Jean Strahlendorf, Ph.D., will present the results of her research on “Climate Changes in Pagosa Springs Evaluated by Temperature and Precipitation.”

Nancy Savage will tell about “Our Solar System” and Janie Garms will talk about “Deep Sky Objects Including Stellar Evolution and Other Galaxies.”

We have an entire room with books and magazines related to astronomy and the earth. There is information and material for all ages to learn and enjoy. We will be streaming “Cosmos” in the computer lab.

Don’t forget to bring your telescope to the Telescope Trauma Team, and, children, bring your coupon for a free moon cake.

The vendor booths also have something for everyone. Many vendors are having fun making wonderful Mother’s Day gifts that all children can afford to buy. There will be other items for purchase and information on how to make your life and our planet better.

The wellness people from Pagosa Springs Medical Center will be there to check your blood pressure. You can also do the heart-healthy blood test from 8 to 10:30 a.m. with a 12-hour fast or set a time for a future test.

Lastly, there will be a big card for people to sign in support of Pagosa’s youth and the PSYC. There are three donation categories: Shining Star, Bright Star (for over $100) and Supernova (for over $1,000).

Hope to see you there. You will be amazed.
