The journey to the tourney.
The perfect season. An unblemished 26-0 record.
One team, one dream.
Once a dream, now a reality.
Smiles, tears, hugs and laughter abound when the final buzzer sounded in the Lockridge Arena Saturday night — both in the arena, part of the Colorado School of Mines campus, and 267 miles away in Pagosa Springs.
With that final buzzer, the Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate basketball team claimed the top spot among 3A teams for the first time in program history — a feat that can never be topped, only matched.
Three times in the past — 1998, 1999 and 2014 — the team played in the championship game, only to find itself experiencing the heartbreak of coming in second.
But not this year.
