It was no easy feat for the Lady Pirates to lay claim to the 3A state title and an unblemished record.
In the final three days of the season, the team had to beat a familiar league foe for the fourth time, the 2014 2A state champion and a team that earned a higher ranking than the Pirates throughout the season and postseason.
“The girls were as focused as I’ve seen them the last two weeks of the season,” coach Wes Lewis said at Monday evening’s pep rally.
The Pirates’ Great 8 game was against a familiar foe, the Centauri Falcons, whom the Pirates had beaten three times previously on the season.
And, as the coach predicted, it was a low-scoring affair.
In fact, the game’s first point didn’t come until about halfway through the first quarter, when Morgan Lewis hit a free throw.
Centauri countered with a free throw of their own a short time later.
