The Pagosa Springs Lady Pirates came out victorious in a tough game against the Lutheran Lions Friday night in Golden, advancing to Saturday’s 3A state championship game, which will be played at 5:30 p.m.
After numerous lead changes and tied scores, the Pirates claimed a 52-45 win over the defending 2A champs to claim their spot in the finals for the second year in a row.
Now, the Lady Pirates will take on the Sterling Tigers, who defeated Manitou Springs 36-34 earlier today. With the win, the Lady Pirates are 25-0 on the season. The Tigers are 26-0.
Last year, the Pagosa beat Sterling 41-29 in the Final Four.
The win that put Pagosa in tomorrow’s championship game, however, did not come easy.
The Lady Pirates put the first points of the game on the board against the Lutheran Lions and, at one point in the first quarter, built a five-point lead, but the score at the end of the quarter only favored Pagosa by one, 9-8.
The game continued to be close in the second, with the Lady Pirates taking a lead several times, but the Lions tying the game four times in the quarter. The Lions took their first lead of the day with mere seconds left in the second quarter, taking a 21-18 lead into halftime.
The Pirates built up another five-point lead in the third quarter, but a 10-2 Lutheran run put the Lions on top 38-34 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, however, the Lady Pirates limited the Lions to seven points while scoring 18 of their own. With under a minute left, Pagosa took its first and only double-digit lead.
