Special to The SUN
The fifth annual WinterFest Nordic ski weekend is this weekend, Feb. 14 and 15.
This year’s events features a BB gun biathlon on Saturday, Feb. 14, with all ages and abilities welcome to participate.
There will be a 12K/6K and KidK course with three opportunities to shoot at targets in between laps. This race will be held at West Fork. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., at which time racers can inspect the course and practice at the shooting range. Races begin at 9 a.m. sharp. The shooting range will be easily accessible from the parking area for spectators. Prizes will be awarded immediately following the races.
On Sunday, Feb. 15, the Plumtaw Ultra 30K and 60K freestyle cross-country ski race takes place for the heartier Nordic skiers. The course follows Four Mile Road to Plumtaw Road then extends towards McManus Road and back.
Last year’s event was well attended by visitors from around the state and Four Corners region. The Plumtaw Ultra Nordic Ski Race was added last year as a means to attract serious racers from out of town and to provide a long race for locals to test their endurance skills. With the warm temperatures expected this week, some course modifications may be needed due to a few bare spots now forming. Any course revisions will be posted on PagosaNordic.com. This race course is considered one of the best out-and-back Nordic ski race courses in Colorado. Prizes and awards will be given out following the event at the Pagosa Brewing Company, located at 118 N. Pagosa Blvd.
