Lady Pirates look for return to state

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate basketball team is ready for another crack at the state championship.

The Lady Pirates are coming off a season where their only loss came at the hands of the Holy Family Tigers in the state championship game — despite the Pirates holding a lead for most of the game. Holy Family has since moved up to 4A competition.

Pagosa ended the season one game short of a perfect season, with an overall record of 25-1. The team also ended with a perfect 8-0 league record.

“I guess I would say that I’m disappointed for my girls, but not in them. I’m proud as heck of them,” coach Wes Lewis said following the 2013-14 state tournament, calling it a great year and a great group of girls, adding, “We were on a journey all year long and we just came up a little short.”

The team lost three starters from last year’s squad, leaving several others to carry on the team’s winning ways this season and take the journey that will hopefully lead to the state tournament.

On this year’s journey, the team will face some new competition with the addition of a team to the league.

New to the Intermountain League this year are the Montezuma-Cortez High School Panthers, who moved down from 4A to 3A action. Last season, the Panthers were 0-10 in league play and 0-18 overall.

The league also includes Centauri, Monte Vista, Alamosa and Bayfield.

Aside from the Panthers, the Pirates will face a number of familiar foes throughout the regular season.

Following is the team’s regular-season schedule as of Monday. Game dates and times are subject to change.

The Lady Pirates will begin their regular season with a home game versus Ignacio High School Bobcats at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 2.

The following weekend, the team will host the Wolf Creek Classic on Dec. 5 and 6.

The next weekend will also feature tournament play, this time at the Buena Vista Tournament.

On Dec. 19, the Del Norte Tigers will travel to Pagosa for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.

After a brief hiatus for the holidays, the team will head to Durango on Jan. 6 for a 7 p.m. affair.

The next weekend, on Jan. 16, the team welcomes the Monte Vista Pirates for a 5:30 p.m. game.

The Lady Pirates will take to the road for three games the following week, beginning in Sanford on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 5:30 p.m. for a nonleague game.

Next, the team will head to La Jara to take on the Centauri Falcons at 5:30 p.m.

The following day, the team will take on the nonconference Farmers in Sargent, again at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates return home Friday, Jan. 30, to host the Bayfield Wolverines at 5:30 p.m.
