The Pagosa Springs High School boys soccer team started its season with a bang Tuesday afternoon in Alamosa, bringing home a 3-2 victory over the Mean Moose.
Now, the team will look to extend that win into a streak to remain atop the league standings, with only one non-league game on the team’s schedule this season (versus Salida on Sept. 6).
In Tuesday’s game, the Buccaneers led the Mean Moose at both the end of the first half, 2-1, and the end of the game, for a final score of 3-2.
The Pirates were led by James Berndt’s two goals in the game, while senior Connor Burkesmith scored the team’s other goal. Senior Ben Bard notched an assist in the game, as did sophomore Maverick Miller.
Berndt was named the team’s player of the game, with coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason writing, “James had a very high work rate throughout the game. He elevated our play on both sides of the ball. He also scored twice.”
Kurt-Mason added in a phone interview that the team dominated both in the air and on the ground in the game, calling it a “very good, very solid” game.
Kurt-Mason said the team had 29 shots.
In goal, junior Briar Erskine saved five shots while allowing two goals.
Early in the season, Montezuma Cortez (new to the league this season, 2-0 overall) and Pagosa Springs (1-0 overall) each have one league win. Alamosa and Ridgway are each 0-1, and Bayfield, Crested Butte and Telluride were still 0-0 on the season as of Wednesday.
The Sept. 2 game against the Center Vikings has been canceled.
